A few things to consider when choosing a paint contractor:

Interior painting

Interior painting  requires a high level of painting skills and attention to details such as preparation of the surfaces to be painted.  There are many considerations – analyzing light and its effect on the finished area.  Cornflower blue will create a soothing, calm feeling in a bedroom with southern light; that same blue can turn gray and depressing in a north-facing room.

The processes involved

  • Removing all wall hangings and art, window treatments, appliances, and furniture;
  • Protecting furniture and floors with drop cloths, tarps, and/or blue painter’s tape;
  • Performing any minor drywall repairs as such dents, nail holes, dings, and nail pops necessary to perfect surfaces prior to painting;
  • “cutting in” with the new new color around windows, doors and ceiling;
  • Painting
  • Clean up

We Can Help Fix Common Home Paint Issues

Peeling Trim

It’s very common for areas on trim boards to begin peeling. Most peeling trim is real wood boards used on fascia, door trim, garage trim, or railings. In addition to any wood on the home, peeling typically occurs in areas where moisture or snow accumulate. These areas take a lot of damage from moisture sitting on them and freezing then thawing, and constantly wearing the paint. Once the paint begins to peel, those areas on your home are further exposed to the weather. When water gets into the wood pores and freezes, or water is constantly running through the wood, you’ll begin to see the wood begin to get gray and rot. At this point the only option is often replacement, which can be very costly. Any areas on your home that are currently peeling will most likely be the same areas that peel in the future. We take special care of these areas. By scraping off any peeling paint, we can be sure not to apply onto a surface that already has moisture trapped underneath. Sanding the area will smooth out the edge between what has peeled off and what has not peeled, and sanding will also create a better surface for the paint to bind onto. Finally, after the area has been scraped and sanded, we use a high-quality primer to seal this area. The sanded wood creates a rough surface for the primer to bond to, and the primer in turn creates a better surface for the paint to adhere and bond to than if paint were applied directly to the wood.

Peeling Siding

Often in Iowa you will not find peeling siding on newer homes, due to a variety of newer siding types on the market. However, if any siding is peeling it can be very costly if not taken care of properly. Often when a homes is first built, there is a very thin single coat of paint applied. After 2-10 years, many times the underside of the siding will start to peel, most pronouced on the North side of the home. The North side of the home experiences less sunshine, so moisture has less chance to evaporate. This moisture slowly wears away the paint on the underside of the siding boards. Each time it rains or snows, more moisture runs down the side of the house, wearing down the paint. The lower siding boards experience this more than the siding boards on the 2nd story

Cracking is one of the most common paint problems in Iowa. Builders often use inexpensive and low-quality caulking when painting a home for the first time. As the temperatures change, your house expands and contracts. This happens again and again, but the caulking begins to break down. Moisture can get into these cracks, sitting behind boards and under paint. This leads to boards warping away from the house or rotting from the inside out. To properly protect your home, we reseal all cracks with a high quality paintable siliconized acrylic caulking. Silicone is more flexible than standard contractors caulking, so it will breathe with the house and last longer.

Fading or chalking is another very common problem in Iowa. Sunny days blast a home with UV rays, breaking down the resin in the paint. Resin is the primary component in paint that protects the home, while pigment gives it the color. When the house starts to fade, this is an indication that the resin has broken down in the paint and there is minimal protection on your home. We recommend a power wash to remove any dust, residue, or chalking from the faded paint. On sides which experience the most sunlight, we recommend an extra coat of finish. This will provide a higher level of resin and protection for that side of the home, ensuring that it will not fade as quickly so you can avoid costly replacement costs in the future and a longer lasting paint job.

Nail Holes

Moisture can sit in nail holes around the house and do damage to your siding. You’ll see areas where there are nail holes beginning to swell due to moisture into the small hole. If nails holes are painted without caulking first to leave an even surface for moisture to flow off, the problem will continue to reoccur.
